Ken Burns – Managing Director

Ken Burns has accumulated a depth of knowledge on all facets of the building and construction industry since he began his career in 1977. He is highly regarded in the building industry, not only for his abundance of experience but also for his hands on approach to projects. Much of this experience has come as a result of his work as a Building Surveyor.

Liaison with local authorities has been a vital aspect of Ken’s ongoing work as a professional Building Surveyor. His commitment to high professional standards has been furthered with the completion of an Associate Diploma in Applied Science (Building) and a Graduate Certificate in Building Fire Safety.

Toby Spencer – Director

Holding a Bachelor of Built Environment (Landscape Architecture) and Graduate Certificate in Building & Planning, Toby is an Unrestricted Building Surveyor (Certifier) in both Queensland and Victoria.

Starting with the company in 2001, Toby has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry and specialist understanding of the National Construction Code (NCC) and other associated Australian Standards. Predominantly focusing on the commercial & industrial sectors, Toby works closely with his clients to provide personal, results driven service.

Emily Edwards – Director

Emily began her career at Bartley Burns in 2003 while completing a Bachelor Business Management at University. As the Business Manager and also the manager of the Residential Certification and Administration teams, Emily has a vast understanding of all aspects of the company. Emily provides a valuable bridge between Bartley Burns’ administration / business activities, with the company’s technical operations.

Emily has worked closely with fellow Directors to enhance Bartley Burns’ corporate policies, identity, reputation and brand – a central role in making Bartley Burns the distinctive and integrated development consultancy it is today.

Ben Lewis – Town Planning Manager

As an outcome orientated Planner Ben is a natural problem solver who utilises his extensive knowledge to negotiate appropriate outcomes which satisfy both the client and local or state government requirements. Ben has been involved in a wide range of projects throughout Queensland and has the benefit of working for a substantial period of time within a Town Planning and Surveying Consultancy. Ben’s approach is hands on from inception to completion providing continuity of advice from end to end for a development proposal.

Ben was one of a select group involved in Brisbane City Council’s initial RiskSMART Pilot program and has been involved in the process since the early conception of the program.
